Frequently asked

Quick answers

The five questions players ask before they ever press Play.

Is the Minecraft Launcher free?
Yes. The installer is free to download. Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and other titles still require a valid license, Game Pass entitlement, or demo where offered.
Do I need to install Java separately?
Not for the official launcher's default Java Edition installations. It downloads a bundled runtime automatically. You only need a separate JDK for servers or third-party launchers.
Can I play Bedrock on Mac or Linux?
Not officially. Bedrock on PC is a Windows 10/11 title. macOS and Linux users play Java Edition through the official launcher.
Where should I download the launcher?
Always use minecraft.net/en-us/download or the Microsoft Store listing. Third-party catalogues like Softonic are listings, not official sources.
What are the 2026 Java Edition PC requirements?
Mojang's July 2026 update sets minimum around 8 GB RAM (12 GB with integrated graphics) and recommended at 16 GB with an RTX 2060-class GPU. See our full requirements guide.
